Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Review of the Year 1944-5. DESCRIPTION: The campaigns of 1944 were planned at the Tehran Conference, with the meeting of Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill. The Russians continued to sweep forward, liberating city after city, they reached the borders of Poland and moved towards Roumania. In Italy the Anzio beachhead was established and the monastery to Monte Cassino, a German bolt hole, was shattered. The Germans were in retreat and the Fifth Army reached Rome. June saw D-Day and the historic landings on the beaches of Normandy followed by the move inland and the liberation of Paris. In the Low Countries there were the Arnhem landings and the capture of Antwerp. Great advances have been made in the Pacific arena in the war against Japan. General MacArthur returned to the Philippines. Burma was the scene of fierce fighting by Britain’s 14th Army when they stopped the Japanese invasion of India. SHOTLIST: Cut story - Map of Germany with chain of iron round same. CU Stalin. Churchill, & Roosevelt at Tehran, together & individually. Russian infantry advance on tanks in snow, across fields, & into streets fighting, also tanks move through & motorised infantry. In Rome, Germans leave, using all kinds of conveyance. Shots of Fifth Army entering. CU Alexander & Clark. D-Day, landing craft off beaches of France, Monty off duck [sic] on beach. LS Caen, & US troops across fields. Shots of convoy, trucks, tanks etc. At Falaise prisoners brought in. Aerial shot of Paris. De Gaulle walks through crowded streets. FFI fighting in streets. Brussels - Second Army troops enter, crowds cheering. Paratroops dropping on Arnhem, Yanky troops on Nijmegen bridge, Sherman tanks cross. Shots of Scheldt Estuary. Shots of Siegfried Line, tank obstacles, etc. V1 (doodlebug) in flight, & wreckage caused by same, various shots. CU Churchill, Roosevelt, & Stalin, together & single. Map of Pacific area with indication arrows. Battleship firing heavy guns, amphibious craft lands on Philippines. MacArthur comes ashore, wades through water. GV Japanese Battleship firing heavy guns, & aerial shot of same being shot up by Allied planes. Chindits fighting in jungles of Burma, firing Vickers machine guns. Aussies fighting, Sherman tanks through jungle. GV of Allied fleets at sea. Aircraft carrier, Barracuda takes off. LS of same in flight. In Japan, Emperor of Jap troops; sailors receive decorations.
