    British cinema newsreel library covering British Movietone News in its entirety from 1929-1979. Online database is fully searchable (the database also includes the TV-AM library) with detailed shotlists available. All its issues can now be viewed online via QuickTime and requires registration, which is free.

    In 2015 the entire archive was published on a Movietone YouTube channel by AP Archive making thousands of news stories freely available to browse, share and embed. Note: Much of the metadata has been stripped out (for example release date and issue number) making a search for a specific event more difficult.

    MediaPlus replaces the former Jisc MediaHub subscription service, which was retired at the end of August 2016. The new service, MediaPlus, is now being delivered to the UK higher and further education community by Alexander Street Press in association with Jisc, and consists of more than 100,000 videos, images, and sound recordings. Currently available resources includes the content which was available on the Jisc MediaHub, including ITN, Getty images and Wellcome Library images and sound.

    This London-based independent news organisation not only offers short courses on factual film-making but also supplies international video coverage to such major organisations as CNN, Channel Four, the BBC and many others. The website offers some two dozen streamed stories (requiring Windows Media Player) from around the globe, adequately encoded and lasting on average between ten and fifteen minutes each. Half a dozen full-length titles are also offered for sale on DVD. The subjects covered include famine in Ethiopia, unrest in Sierra Leone as well as the fortunes of West African migrants as well as reports from Burma, Bangladesh, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Israel and several other countries.
    This site is no longer active, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine offers a capture of the website as it appeared on 14/08/2014. This does not include access to the moving images.

    The BBC’s flagship news and current affairs programme revamped its website at the beginning of 2009. It now provides information on the programme’s on-screen team in their new ‘reporter profiles’; wider issues can be discussed on the team blog and reporters Jane Corbin, John Sweeney and Raphael Rowe blog about the challenging situations they face in their work; executive producer Tom Giles provides an insight into the editorial dilemmas and pitfalls which pepper the process of making the programmes. The ‘About Panorama’ section provides a history of the programme (the world’s longest-running investigative programme) and a short film on the first 50 years and classic clips from the last six decades. Episodes continue to be streamed for a full 12 months after transmission and written details of programmes are given going back to 2000.

    The Federal Film Archives, Berlin, are digitising the Deutsche Wocheschau newsreel collection of German newsreels from 1949 and making them freely available over the internet. Over 6,000 stories have been issued so far, for lowband (56K) or broadband (250K) connections, using Windows Media Player.. The latter requires registration. Each clips comes with ‘storyboard’ and background information, and searching is by freetext, or by topic, personality, date or location. There are English language and German language versions of the site, but catalogue descriptions are in German only. The commentaries on the newsreels are, of course, in German.

    The French national repository for broadcast archives, INA holds two main bodies of material. Firstly it is the audiovisual archive for French national radio and television stations, dating back to the 1930s (radio) and 1940s (newsreels). INA is also the French legal deposit archive and holds two million hours of broadcasts from nearly 100 television stations and twenty radio stations. In order to fulfil its public access remit INA has made available online over 25,000 hours of rights-cleared content, which can be viewed freely on the website but also bought on a pay-per-download basis.     The European Union’s TV news agency Europe by Satellite (EbS) is a service providing coverage of EU affairs for TV and radio professionals. The programmes are available live in German, French and English and the archive section allows access in several more languages. An effective back-up service is also available in the web archive, which allows emergency meetings and press conferences to be retransmitted. Additional information includes detailed schedules of political broadcasts and re-transmissions. This content is available for on-demand viewing (Real and Flash) and most of it also for download in a variety of bandwidths. Links to other websites, and information on use and access are also provided in a comprehensive and easy to understand manner. A huge advantage of this website is that material may be used free of charge and free of rights for educational purposes.
