This Twitter feed features GIFs of beautifully animated designs showing traditional Japanese joinery styles and woodwork techniques. The animations illustrate how, without the help of nails or adhesive, Japanese carpenters and joiners were able to create different ways of bonding wood together.

LIMA is a Dutch arts body that promotes sustainable access to media art, aiming to ensure the preservation of video, digital and performance artwork. Their collection dates back to the early 1960s and includes work by many prominent artists including Nam June Paik, Nicolas Provost, Marina Abramovic, Nan Hoover and Jan Fabre. A number of useful videos provide a series of ‘tours’ around the collection, looking at different thematic areas, such as Cinema, Performance and Activism. The LIMA catalogue features over two thousand works by five hundred national and international artists: each entry is catalogued by keyword, date, type, genre and artist. Many clips are accompanied by a video preview. The works are available to hire: details are given here and many are also available to buy for educational use.

    Courses, Streaming/Download

This site is the YouTube channel of an organisation which offers a number of services (in the form of courses, films, books etc.) relating to how ideas from the humanities - literature, philosophy, psychology and the visual arts - can help ‘exercise, stimulate and expand your mind’. Although the focus is on a general audience, and the ethos is towards ‘self help’ rather than academic study, the videos are well-made and could be used in a classroom setting. Featuring simple but effective animations and clearly spoken commentaries, the films (which are usually around 6 - 7 minutes long) are arranged by subject matter, and cover a broad range of subjects from the humanities and social sciences, including the History of Ideas, Sociology, Political Theory, Literature and Art and Architecture. The series on philosophy introduces the basic concepts and ideas of thinkers from Plato, Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas to Schopenhauer, Hegel, Wittgenstein and Foucault.
