This YouTube site is a freely available educational resource created by the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospnheric Administration. It provides a platform for users to follow undersea explorations, observe marine flora and fauna and learn about exploration technologies. A number of links take users to further learning resources on the Ocean Explorer site, as well as channels focussing on different aspects relating to oceanography, including ecology, fishing, sustainability and climatology.

A portal which helps people to ‘find great podcasts’. Curated by Max Temkin and Veronica Corzo-Duchardt, the site presents a selection of mainly American podcasts, arranged under a number of topics, including Tech, Science & Education, Politics & Econ and Storytelling. An Interview page features transcripts of question and answer sessions with podcasters, writers, designers and other culturally-aware, creative people, who talk about their favourite podcasts, and why (and how) they like listening to them. The site works well because its focus is fairly narrow: the emphasis is on curation, and presenting a carefully selected range of interesting podcasts, rather than a comprehensive but overwhelming list of resources.

Nicely designed site produced by the University of Nottingham, featuring a series of short films made by video journalist Brady Haran about the science of food and drink. Most of the videos feature researchers from The University of Nottinghm, especially the university’s Division of Food Sciences. The site covers topics such as extending the shelf life of foods, the molecular structure of ice cream, the importance of folic acid and Edible Water. Accessible and interesting.

Telegraph TV comprises 12 channels presenting video reports linked to the Telegraph newspaper. Individual channels focus on news, fashion, travel, money, cars, football, business, culture, food, technology, archive stories, as well as Right On - a political channel presenting right-of-centre content. This weekly show has three elements - a round-table discussion chaired by Ann Widdecombe, an ‘Alas Smith and Jones’ type sketch featuring Conservative blogger Ian Dale and associate editor SimonHeffer, and political gossip entitled ‘Westminster Whispers’.

BIBS is an interactive television system constructed using Internet2 Mbone IP-Multicast technology and Real Networks streaming media technology, being developed on the UC Berkeley campus to support distance learning, distributed collaboration, and interactive television applications. BIBS produces live webcasts, then archives these for on-demand replay (at least 100 Kbs bandwidth required). The schedule for 2001 includes lecture series on General Biology, General Chemistry, Computing, Classic Myths, Aging, Microelectromechanical Systems, Mathematics, Nutrition and Physics. Most of the lectures use Real Media and the individual schedules are clearly laid out, although not all lecture titles are given. This site is no longer active, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine offers a capture of the website as it appeared on 13/10/2007. This does not include access to the moving images.

This site accompanies the American PBS television series Cooking with Master Chefs, In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs, Baking with Julia and Cooking in Concert. It contains a substantial ‘Prime Video Cuts’ section of streamed videos taken from the programmes, which are searchable by category, ingredient, chef and series, and viewable over low or highband connections using RealPlayer or Windows Media Player. Each video is accompanied by a transcription which allows the viewer to join the video at any selected start point. The recipes themselves, however, are not given. Other sections, such as ‘Tricks of the Trade’ and ‘Eater’s Digest’ also link into video segments.

The various sections are illustrated by Real Player video clips of chocolate production and audio clips of scientists. There is also a video tour of the Scharffen Berger chocolate factory, near San Francisco.

Part of the Internet Archive, which also covers archived moving images (The Internet Moving Images Archive), audio and software, the Wayback Machine holds cached versions of thousands of websites and billions of pages, allowing users to look at sites that are no longer available or at earlier versions of ones that are still around. An invaluable resource that, due to the gigantic nature of the holdings, is slightly hampered by the fact that no list of the holdings can be easily provided. This means inevitably that correct recall of the URL in question is necessary, or failing that, searching for it on the web first.
