Funded by Film London and the BBC, this site aims to be the key web destination for those interested in filmmaking on a micro-budget. A series of videos with industry experts aims to take would-be filmmakers through all the stages of the process and offers a comprehensive introduction to legal matters, finance and budgets, selling and distribution, post-production and exhibition, to name just some of the areas covered. There is information on sales and distribution, festivals, location shooting, cross media strategies, and a comprehensive guide to the various sources of funding available. A series of recordings from events held at Film London’s Microschool is available in podcast form, featuring lectures and talks on location filming, music, screenwriting, casting and working with actors to name but a few. The site also provides news on the latest in the independent film-making sector, an excellent links page and has a Get Inspired section, covering films which have been funded by the Microwave scheme. An essential port of call for all low-budget filmmakers, or anyone considering a career in the industry.

The NSF is an American Federal Agency which funds research across a wide range of scientific areas, from astronomy to geology to zoology, with the exception of medical science. A particular aim is to fund cutting-edge research: projects and collaborations which may "seem like science fiction today" but tomorrow will be accepted as part of the fabric of everyday life. Their nanoscience page reflects this commitment to pushing back the frontiers of scientific research. The Multimedia Gallery features stills, podcasts, film and video across all fields of science and engineering, again, with an emphasis on current research and development, coupled with an awareness of the foundation’s educational mission.

This Week in Virology (TWiV) is a site featuring podcasts, lectures and videos about viruses - "the kind that make you sick" as the website puts it. It was begun in September 2008 by Vincent Racaniello and Dick Despommier, two science Professors at Columbia University Medical Centre. Although obviously likely to appeal to those with an academic or professional interest in the subject, the website aims to be accessible to everyone, "no matter what their scientific background".

Open Culture boasts that it offers "the best free cultural & educational media on the web" and their site does a lot to live up to that claim, providing access to a large number of free educational resources, including online courses, language lessons, films and audiobooks. More than simply a list of links, Open Culture is divided into various sections which provide users with a variety of different approaches to navigating the web’s cultural and educational resources, such as a section called 125 Great Science Videos, which is a selective list of films, sub-divided into narrower scientific headings such as Technology & Mathematics, Environment, Geology and & Ecology, Physics, Astronomy & Space Travel etc. Another useful section of the site is a round-up of Intelligent YouTube Channels, which does a good job of sorting the wheat from the chaff and includes a list of universities which have collections of material on YouTube, offering brief comments on each site.

The stated aim of this resource is to create a public space to discuss issues at the point where science and social policy intersect. The site presents a series of lectures, interviews and readings from various conferences and symposia with the emphasis on serious current scientific research and its moral, ethical and philosophical implications. The subjects covered include cognitive science, neuroscience, stem cell research, oncology, evolution and aging. The site has much that is interesting but of particular note are the proceedings of the Beyond Belief conference, a lively wide-ranging conference on science and religion featuring a large group of eminent scientists and philosophers, including Richard Dawkins, biologist and philosopher Francisco J. Ayala, planetary scientist Carolyn Porco and co-founder and Director of The Science Network Roger Bingham. TSN’s website features streaming videos and podcasts, which are also available for download.

A monthly seminar series, hosted by Stewart Brand, founder of The Long Now Foundation. The SALT seminars were started in 2003 with the aim of building "a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking to help nudge civilization toward our goal of making long-term thinking automatic and common instead of difficult and rare". The website includes podcasts from a wide range of speakers, including geneticist Craig Ventner, technologist Ray Kurzweil and musician Brian Eno. A recurring concern is the use of environmental resources, but all speakers, from whatever discipline, are encouraged to frame their thoughts with reference to the deep past and the deep future: ie. to look 10,000 years ahead to combat the short-term thinking that the Long Now Foundation sees as endemic in modern culture. The entire archive of podcasts is available and new seminars are streamed live. Video of the seminars is available to members of the Long Now Foundation.

Website based on the bestselling books by economist Steven D. Levitt and journalist and author Stephen J. Dubner. Levitt and Dubner explore various aspects of life as seen through the prism of economics and conversely consider how looking at popular culture and everyday life can give new and surprising insights into economic theory, which, they argue, is essentially the study of incentives. The Freakonomics website has a series of short lectures, as well as podcasts on a variety of subjects.
