Excellent new site from the BBC, giving a wide range of advice, information and instruction on football, cricket, golf, tennis, rugby union, rugby league, athletics, basketball, swimming and other sports. Each sport has a video masterclass (e.g. for cricket, Ian Salisbury demonstrating spin bowling and Mark Ramprakash showing batting strokes; for football, the Fulham Ladies show how to get past defenders), information on equipment, rules, and how to take part across the country, as well as special features, interviews with stars, and plenty of illustrative material. There is also a ‘Disability’ section for each sport, a ‘virtual gym’, and advice on diet and sports injuries. The video requires RealPlayer, and is available for modem and broadband connections.

Although there are many websites devoted to classic TV programmes, this one distinguishes itself for its better than average design and layout and for the seriousness with which it approaches its subject and the level of detail it provides. The site includes broadcast information on UK TV and some radio programmes, giving credits and transmission dates (both mostly taken from the Radio Times), interviews, articles, news, as well as a discussion forum with some 300 registered users. There is also a link to the homepage of a related publication, Timescreen which is devoted to TV fantasy programmes - it includes web versions of the magazine’s articles. In addition there is a gazetteer which features useful details of other similar forums, details on distributors and like-minded publications.

Although this has a strong American bias, the site provides a number of useful links to media-related educational sites and a number of forums for staff and students. A DocuSeek search allows you to search for key words, videos by grade level, length, filmmaker, and other characteristics, in addition to searching for key words. Member distributors include Bullfrog Films, California Newsreel, Direct Cinema Limited, Fanlight Productions, First Run/Icarus Films, New Day, and Women Make Movies.

This site for the venerable BBC astronomy series hosted by Patrick Moore also includes an archive of past editions going back to December 2001 which requires RealOne to view. In addition there are a few selected clips from earlier programmes going back to 1960. There is also a fair amount of general scientific information, handily presented in alphabetical order by subject. The site has not been updated since September 2008.

This George Mason University site examines the accented speech of speakers from many different language backgrounds reading the same sample paragraph. Ninety-one national origins are covered from Afrikaans to Zulu. Details of nationality, age, sex, residence and the means by which they learned English are given. The paragraph each person reads has been chosen for containing most of the consonants, vowels, and clusters of standard American English: 'Please call Stella. Ask her to bring these things with her from the store: Six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother Bob. We also need a small plastic snake and a big toy frog for the kids. She can scoop these things into three red bags, and we will go meet her Wednesday at the train station'. The audio files use QuickTime.
