Foods That Make Billions, The

Synopsis
This series consists of three sixty minute programmes which examine how the food industry has exploited people’s concerns about health to turn three simple food staples into hugely profitable industries. The companies Muller, Kelloggs and Evian sell, respectively yoghurt, cereal and water around the world and their global brands have taken basic foodstuffs, repackaged them and marketed them in such a way as to make them appear essential.

The first programme, LIQUID GOLD, tells the extraordinary story of how the bottled water industry has grown from nothing to become one of the biggest success stories in the modern food and beverage industry in just forty years. The second programme, The AGE OF PLENTY tells how big business has turned grain into the biggest success story of the modern food industry. Inside the cereal box is the most sophisticated confection of invention, processing and advertising that modern business has ever seen. The final programme, POTS OF GOLD, tells the story of how, over the past forty years, yoghurt has been transformed from a minority health food into a super food, driving a health revolution in the modern food business.

NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
