Synopsis: Two case studies illustrate how environmental impact assessment works and how effective it is: At Shellharbour the plan is to dredge a wetland and build groynes to convert the area to a harbour for a residential development and at Jabiluka a proposed uranium mine would produce a tailings dam that could contaminate local water with radioactivity. Although environmental imapact assessments have been carried out the protestors are not always willing to accept the legal decision.
