David Smith: An Artist in Antarctica

Synopsis
Artist David Smith took part in a seven-month voyage on a British Antarctic survey ship, during which he sketched and painted life on board ship and the surrounding land and seascapes. On location he talks about the voyage and describes his methods of drawing and painting using a variety of methods. A second sequence shows Smith painting St Catherine’s lighthouse on the Isle of Wight; after making sketches and watercolours of the lightouuse he works on the oil painting in his studio and as he works talks to Belinda Beck, describing his technique and attitude to painting and art.
