Synopsis
Series looking into the struggle between the belief systems of religion and science.
1: Explores the passions and fears surrounding the evolutionary debate. Follows the story of the Anti-Evolution Bill before the US Senate that would ban the teaching of evolution as anything other than theory. The forthcoming US presidential election has intensified the debate.
2: Looks at genetic research - the dark history of Nazi eugenics casts a shadow over a future that promises an end to all inherited illness and the perfection of the human species. Meanwhile the L’Arche community in France offers a challenging alternative with able-bodied people living and working alongside disabled people.
3: Explores the authenticity of mircles, looking a Italian episodes of weeping statues and the dying being cured. The Vatican is questioning its own historical commitment ot the miraculous power of the saints, with scientists and theologicans meeting to discuss the problems.
