Probes / Southern Blot Hybridization

Synopsis
Documents how radioactive nucleic acid probes are used to identify rare sequences of genomic DNA. Genomic DNA, fractionated by agarose gel electrophoresis, is transferred by capillary action onto nylon filters by alkaline transfer. The genomic DNA sequences of interest are identified by the presence of radioactivity of the probe. Results of restriction fragment length polymorphism, or RFLP, are analysed. Illustrates using animation principles of using probes.
