Introduction to Gis Data Capture

Synopsis
Looks at data capture for geographic information systems and examines common pitfalls. Covers: field collection of data; preparation of base maps from field-mapping; description of digitising table and the process of digitising, including node-snapping and treatment of island polygons; use of scanning for heads-up digitising and automated line-following; working in a GIS laboratory using ARC/INFO on Sun workstations. The programme is based on an undergraduate student project helping students to see how the theory of data capture translates into practice. Students are seen using GIS to study routes for a bypass around the market town of Bakewell, Derbyshire.
