- Summary
- The fall of the Mareth Line and the resulting German prisoners, masses of them marching across the desert. General Montgomery is seen talking to New Zealand and other troops who took part in the battle. The entry into El Hamma, with tanks and infantry being greeted by inhabitants. In the Oudref area the scene of carnage where the 8th Army met the Afrika Corps in battle. The prize being Gabes, where Montgomery is seen meeting Eisenhower on the eve of the 8th Army and American link-up on the Gasa-Gabes road. The entry into Gabes led by the pipes of the 51st Highland Division. Keeping pace with our advance the Navy delivers supplies all along the coast. Rommel is given no breathing space to establish himself solidly. He could only fight rearguard actions so that his main force could make for the link up with Von Arnim’s Army in the north. Our armoured attacks were forcing him towards Wadi Akarit. During the advance British troops take over a German field ambulance where the injured are taken care of. More prisoners. Marauder bombers play their part in making Rommel’s retreat more difficult. At 4.30 in the morning, Montgomery launches his attack on Akarit. (Excellent desert night barrage). Then the great rendezvous as the 8th Army links up with the Americans.
