- Summary
- The 8th Army continues to advance in the western desert. At Fuka aerodrome dozens of enemy planes and gliders were left behind in the hasty retreat. One of the biggest captures was that of General Ritter von Thoma, Commander of the Afrika Corps and he is seen being met by Montgomery. Mersa Matruh was entered after some stubborn fighting by Afrika Korps rearguard, and great numbers of prisoners were taken. The weather has begun to be a problem with rain and thick mud hampering our advance. The first troops entered Sidi Barrani and at Hallfayn Pass more prisoners waiting to be taken back to El Alamein. British and American squadrons continue to bombard the enemy and in its retreat. On Friday the 13th Tobruk was entered and the Union Jack hoisted. Whole-hearted praise is paid to the men who clear the minefields so enabling our advance to continue. The enemy hits back in a vain attempt to stem the advance day and night. Thousands of Italian prisoners continue to pour in, remnants of divisions the Germans have left behind. Man of the Hour is General Montgomery.
