- Summary
- The landing of American and British troops on Algeria and Morocco brings about a plan which has occupied the thoughts of Churchill and Roosevelt for many months. Very little opposition is offered by Vichy and German planes and those that do approach the convoy are driven off by the ships’ anti-aircraft guns. All along the coastline are thousands of landing craft, many of the men aboard will be seeing action for the first time. Allied aircraft were soon making good use of the Maison Blanche aerodrome at Algiers captured by American Rangers. While at the docks, liners were pouring in the main body of the army of occupation. If Montgomery had failed in Libya this enormous Anglo-American enterprise might have been thrown completely out of gear. Success in Libya therefore was virtually the starting signal which set in motion all the intricate machinery of the Eisenhower-Anderson combine.
