- Summary
- Smuts, Churchill and Lloyd George stand in front of members of both Houses, and Lloyd George introduces the Field Marshal to make his address. Field Marshal Smuts starts off by telling of the honour of being asked to address the Houses. He speaks of England’s bravery and spirit and refers to the war in China and Russia. He says: "We have reached the fourth year of the war. The defence phase has now ended. The stage is set for the last, the offensive phase." He speaks of Hitler and the dark pages of modern history. He calls for a fight to the death for man’s liberty, and it arrives. He says: "One thing has already emerged, that we have accepted the name of the United Nations, this is the new conception, much in advance of the old conflict of the League of Nations." He finishes with: "... and may heaven’s blessing rest on our work in war to ‘signify their feelings by rising and giving him acclamation which his character, his life’s work, equally deserve’. Members sing "For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow".
