Summary

Review of the year that started off with Mr Chamberlain going to Rome to confer with Mussolini. Royal events at home and abroad. The Pope is crowned. General Franco reviews his army in Barcelona. Sport - including, the Grand National, the Cup Final and the Derby. Then the outbreak of war, with Britain making defensive preparations, the first of the BEF go to France, Poland invaded. And at sea HMS Courageous is sunk, also the City of Mandalay, and the heroic survivors of the Rawalpindi are publicly honoured. And as the year draws to its close, the King goes to the Front.
