- Summary
- Enormous field of 66 runners - a record - compete for 1929’s Grand National, worth £14,000 to the winner! The Course is 4 miles 836 yards and 30 obstacles have to be negotiated. Our 45 cameramen - the world’s record number to be employed on the event. Like a regiment of cavalry, the 66 horses charged at the first fence - and marvellously enough, they all cleared it. At third fence, about ten fell, including "Darracq" and "Mount Etna". Safely over the first 5 jumps, Becher’s Brook with its dreaded 3 ft 3 ins drop - is reached. The Canal Turn. The Water Jump. Unique slow-motion stop camera studies. At the end of the first round, only 22 were "up". "Easter Hero" with top weight of 12 st 7, put up a gallant performance. So "Gregalech" - like the Lincoln winner starting at 100-1 and also owned by a lady, won another sensational National.
