Summary
one of the greatest engineering feats of the country - opened by the King and Queen ... the excavation and sinking of the 4 great caisson for the foundation ... the flinging of the 2 great steel arches, weighing 4,500 tons, across the Tyne ... then, the two halves were lowered into position and linked together ... to-day - 38 ft road, with double tram tract 83 ft above the water suspended from the mighty arch ... 40,000 children greet their King and Queen.
