- Summary
- COI synopsis: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, arrived at Rio de Janeiro in the royal yacht ‘Britannia’ at the start of the first state visit to Brazil of a British sovereign. At Brasilia, the capital, they were welcomed by the President and his wife, Senor and Senora Costa de Silva. The Queen received from the President the Grand Collar of Cruzeiro and conferred on him the Order of the Knight Grand Cross of the Bath before addressing the National Congress and attending a state banquet. In Sao Paulo the Queen laid a wreath at the Independence Monument and visited both the Jockey Club and a stud farm before returning to Rio to hold a reception on board the royal yacht. Her majesty and the Duke saw samba dancers during a reception at the British Embassy. On the following day they attended a remembrance ceremony at the tomb of Brazil’s unknown soldier. Queen Elizabeth also watched a football match at the Maria Filho stadium before leaving by air at the end of her one-week state visit.
