Summary
The March of Time synopsis: The March of Time sets in sharp relief the differences in meaning, aim and teachings between the regimented militarized youth groups of the dictatorships, and the ideals of individualism and peace on which are based the doctrines of the Boy Scout Movement. This movement has developed far beyond its original aim of supplying constructive fun and clean companionship. Today it has become a real force in keeping alive the principles and traditions of democracy. The March of Time shows how this large youth group has become a training ground in which each boy learns through his own experiences an unshakable faith and belief in democratic ideals. The film follows each age-group, starting with the moppet cub scout of nine who is taught to think for himself, and to assume serious obligations through practical lessons which centre around his own experiences. Portrayed in "Youth Prepares" is the range of these experiences from sea scouting, where a boy’s love of the sea is turned into productive channels, to hard-earned excursions, where his mind is sharpened, his powers of observation increased as he comes to understand the world in which he lives, and in which he must some day take his place.
Founded in Britain by Lord Baden-Powell thirty-one years ago, the Scout Movement has come to assume a new international importance. Throughout the British Empire, France and the U.S., no organization is receiving more wholehearted support. Scout leaders point to their promotion of tolerance by accepting boys from every walk of life, regardless of religion, creed or colour. Each scout, Protestant, Jew and Catholic, is encouraged to be faithful in his own religious duties, and at the same time to respect the rights and convictions of others. And today in the Boy Scout Movement more and more people see a way to promote a form of sane, practical patriotism and love of country that will contribute to the future of the world.
