Summary
Monthly Film Bulletin synopsis: No longer is the world of business a man’s world; in point of numbers women are even more important. Many brilliant women in America have risen to high executive positions in industry and in national affairs. Business schools and colleges throughout the country are equipping girls for careers which will lead them to New York and other big cities. The average New York working girl, however, earns only £3 a week, whereas in New York, according to recent surveys, she is unable to live comfortably alone for less than £4.10s. For those who earn less, there are such hostels as the Y.W.C.A. provides where girls can earn part of their board. This year the business boom has revived an old swindle - the advertising of guaranteed city jobs to small town girls. When the girl finds that the job is that of housemaid with free board and room, but no pay, she rejects it and goes through the mill of New York’s 800 employment agencies looking for a job in vain, until the money that might have taken her back home is gone. A pretty girl in these circumstances, however, can still earn money in New York’s "taxi-dance" halls. She earns approximately threepence from each sixpenny dance; after the dance hall has closed, she can earn better money by leading a client into a nearby night club for a pre-arranged share of the bill. A dispute over an excessive bill brings the racket to the notice of the police. New York Welfare Council leads a campaign through social agencies and the press warning girls throughout the country not to be lured to the big city.
