Summary
The March of Time synopsis: As the Irish Free State comes to the fore in world affairs and there is talk of reform of the Irish Constitution. March of Time cameramen and researchers draw up the balance sheet of President Eamon De Valera’s administration. Not since O’Connell and Parnell has any man had so strong a hold over the hearts of his people as this scholarly mathematics professor, born overseas. In 1932 he launched a programme to build a new Ireland, a bold programme of economic self-sufficiency which led to "economic war" with England - a war which has at times threatened to have serious consequences.
To-day, as he drafts a new constitution, President De Valera plans to extend the Government’s reform programme, and The March of Time presents a review of the changes that have taken place since Ireland’s "New Deal" was launched. On the economic front, startling changes have taken place in Ireland. Whole populations have been moved from barren areas to former grazing lands. Ireland grows wheat aain, new food industries spring up, new methods are applied to dairy-farming. Aided by the Government, seven hundred new factories spring in to being, new crops are planted, old crops find new uses. Change and expansion take place in industries that are themselves older than the Free State. Social services and public utilities are reviewed by The March of Time camera, their developments graphically recorded. In Dublin the camera finds the outward evidence of a new prosperity as huge theatres are packed and Ireland begins making its own talking films. To Irish ports come her sons fro many lands, bringing an influx of revenue reflecting the prosperity of England and America. Then, in the first sound pictures ever taken of a meeting of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State, The March of Time records President De Valera’s striking review of accomplishments and statement of his policy the essence of Ireland’s "New Deal".
