Summary
The March of Time synopsis: Steeped in the brave tradition of America’s oldest industry are Gloucester’s hardy fishermen who go down to the sea in little boats and take their chances on not coming back. For 300 years their tiny craft have ridden the perilous swells of the North Atlantic. To-day, however, there is a growing realisation that the schooner fleet’s best days are over and that soon Boston’s mechanised steam trawlers will rule the Banks. Far more efficient, they operate mechanically, fish 24 hours a day. Rough seas and darkness seldom half their work as steam winches keep the drag nets moving. For the men there is always hot food, even a radio telephone to bring weather reports and news of the Boston Fish Market, where the skippers bicker shrewdly with buyers on the floor of the Fish Exchange. March of Time points to Boston’s biggest fish find of the century, the redfish, renamed Sea Perch, and sold by the millions to the Middle West. The industry to-day is cheered by this new source of income, jubilant because Congress in approving the reciprocal trade treaty with Canada left the tariff on fish unchanged. Shrewdly is the price held down while meat costs soar, creating in many thrifty households a taste for fish that is new and permanent. The grand old sailing men of Gloucester, though scornful of the prosaic trawler fleet, have these big business men to thank for preserving their industry from ruinous foreign competition.
