- Summary
- The March of Time synopsis: To the little band of pioneers who, three hundred years ago, founded their nation in a new world, freedom was no easy heritage but a brave new principle to be fought for and won. Out of a stubborn and unpromising land these men of courage and great spirit found the means to establish a new and independent existence. To their frontiers the early settlers brought, in all its dignity and beauty, the inherited culture of the old world, and to it they added new expressions of the character and environment of the new world. In the early 1800’s, at the start of America’s industrial revolution, shrewd Yankees were quick to invest the fortunes they had amassed as merchants and traders to turn New England into the nation’s first great manufacturing region. With their new fortunes they built prosperous cities greatest of them all New England’s financial capital - Boston. But it is the homely account of the daily round in Exeter that gives a typical picture of small town life in these New England States. The introduction of local characters - the employer who knows each employee, the editor of the town paper, the members of the little police force and fire service, the small shop owner, ring a familiar note, reminiscent of life in county towns in England. And in common with the people of England, these people of New England know that today they are facing a long and desperate struggle which calls for sacrifice. Already New England is in the front line of America’s great preliminary battle - the battle of production. From the shipyards are coming vessels for the nation’s two-ocean navy and replacements for a bridge of ships between England and America, and New England’s industrial army can well be proud of its high production rate.
