- Summary
- Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: Sir Roy Welensky holds a number of meetings and informal gatherings to explain the Franchise Act to Nyasaland.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - The Prime Minister held numerous informal discussions in Nyasaland to explain the implications of the Federal Franchise Act. He met a group of Africans in the Ramsay Hall in Blantyre and readily answered inumerable questions. Returning to the Ramsay Hall later he addressed leading members of the Asiam community, and clarified many of the points put to him, particularly by Mr. Sacranis who is a barrister and President of the Asian Convention.
Europeans were addressed in a Limbe Tobacco Auction Part. It seems certain that many were a great deal impressed by what he had to say. At political meetings and at informal gatherings he explained the government’s viewpoint with tireless energy and endless patience. Seldom has a Prime Minister been at such pains to gain similar approval and sweep away misunderstandings. No question was left unanswered.
During his stay at Lilongue he visited the estate of Nyale a master farmer and outstanding business man who began farming with a few acres, and now has 113 acres under full mechanisation, yielding about £2,000 a year. Where was little fuss raised about the PM’s visit - if there was a flap on it was the ducks who were flapping. - Keywords
