- Summary
- BFI synopsis: A feature looking at medical research and developments, particularly in the field of penicillins and viruses. Largely filmed at the Wright-Fleming Institute it looks at the training of medical students, the work of research teams, innovations such as an artificial lung and machine for investigating the features and effects of thrombosis. Research into hay fever and the production of germ cultures to test drugs and penicillins on is also shown. The film goes on to emphasise the research into anti-germ warfare that the Institute does, in particular, experiments with various penicillins. Dr. Alick Isaac’s research team, investigating viruses such as flu and the common cold, at the National Institute for Medical Research is also covered, and the film ends with scenes at a West Country hospital in a Cold Centre, where volunteers are given colds and studied.
