- Summary
- BFI synopsis: A film taking a look at students and the types of summer jobs they get to earn money during the summer vacation. It begins by concentrating on one particular student from Cambridge University, George Hughes, working in Switzerland as a guide. The film follows him around as he takes tourists to various popular sights in the Alps, including the Blue Lake of Kandersteg, Grindelwald and the Rhone Glacier. It then shows foreign students working in Britain, mainly on a farm camp in Cambridgeshire, fruit picking. Other jobs that students do that are covered include: hop-picking, sandwich-boarding in London’s West End, and working on horse-drawn barges on the Thames and in Wales. Another student, Peter Earle, works as a driver’s mate on a 17-ton driller, and other students are seen working at seaside resorts, and as mechanics.
