BFI synopsis: Looks at the demise of the trams and research into making the transport system more efficient. Trams in a depot. Various shots of trams in use, travelling over Westminster Bridge, and in the countryside. Still photographs of the tram throughout the ages. A tram on a road and a bus on a road. Aerial view of buses in an open depot. The building site of a garage which is being converted from tram use to bus use. A tram in a depot on a traverser, maintenance pit. Oil tanks and piping fitted into the garage. The tram depot. New buses arrive at the new garage. A tram graveyard seen in the rain, tram on a traverser and shot of the tram graveyard with the burning of a tram. New buses on the road - the tram rails can still be seen. A look at various activities, including; buses in Hyde Park and Park Lance; four buses on Horse Guards Parade; London Transport crews; Sir Herbert Morrison with buses and crews; buses being driven from Horse Guards.
