- Summary
- BFI synopsis: A special safety exhibition for the spotting of deliberate mistakes, held at Michael Colliery, Scotland.
NCB Commentary - Michael Colliery is in the forefront of the mining industry’s latest safety drive.
Here, a mine in miniature has been built on the surface, and mineworkers and their families got a chance to cast a knowing eye over an ideally safe roadway.
Tidiness at work is a prime safety rule. There’s a place for everything, and everything in its place.
Supports in the simulated coal face are set straight and in line. Now, the mining visitors get a chance to spot the deliberate mistakes in another part of the exhibit. They’ll gain marks for every safety rule broken they spot, and at the end of it there’ll be money prizes for the highest scorers.
To a skilled miner, most of the mistakes should be obvious, but it’s through obvious errors that accidents are caused.
As well as the model mine, a range of mining safety equipment was on show. It may never be needed, but it’s always available just in case.
In the final analysis, safety is a matter of personal reponsibility.
And personal hopes for those cash prizes go into the ballot box on the completed competition forms.
What happened at Michael Colliery is being duplicated all over the coalfields in the neve ending search for greater safety in our mines. - Keywords
