- BFI synopsis: a look at Stoke Orchard fuel and appliance testing laboratory.
NCB Commentary - This summer the most up-to-date fuel and appliance testing laboratory in the world was opened by Lord Robens.
It has been built at the Coal Research Establishment at Stoke Orchard, in Gloucestershire.
The job of the Establishment, which was opened in 1948, is to make more efficient use of the coal that is mined from the nation’s pits; to turn coal into better domestic fuels.
The new Laboratory can also test solid-fuel domestic appliances before they are put on the market.
Here’s an openable, glass-fronted room heater burning one of the new fuels which have been developed at Stoke Orchard. No smoke - friendly flames and lots of heat.
At Stoke Orchard a pilot plant is making one of the new fuels which will go into production throughot Britain.
The proof of any good fuel is in the burning. This one is clean, hot, dustfree and economical - and it’s neatly packaged in disposable bags.
During testing, one of the new fuels is photographed burning in an open grate - it’s all part of making sure.
And finally, some advice from an expert at Stoke Orchard’s new laboratory with the seveteen smokeless chimneys. - Keywords
