- Summary
- BFI synopsis: Island of Coal film competition - the culmination of a nationwide children’s competition on the subject of coal.
NCB Commentary - It was childrens’ day at a big London cinema - the climax of a nation-wide art and essay contest on the subject of coal.
To the Hammersmith cinema each child brought a lump of coal - "to bring warmth to the older residents".
This was the first national contest which gave children the chance to win something for their parents.
When the lights dimmed a documentary film was shown. It takes a lively look at Britain’s vital coal industry.
To find the winners - over the past months 7,000 children entered drawings, paintings and essays, to illustrate the film’s theme.
And for the 12 best it was the final test.
Lord Robens was on hand to introduce the winners.
Firsst prize went to Paul F. Kaskiewicz. Paul, from Barnsley is 13. He will take his whole family on a 2-week holiday - and win £50 in Premium Bonds.
It was an absorbing morning on this Island of Coal. - Keywords
