- Summary
- BFI synopsis: at Wollaton Colliery in Nottinghamshire, miners use a unique form of mine transport - a "ski-lift" which carries them to and from work.
NCB Commentary - Underground travel for the men of Wollaton Colliery in Nottinghamshire is rather like enjoying the swings and the roundabouts, but you don’t lose on either of them for this time it’s all profit - a profit measured in time and safety.
The design, as you see, is very similar to a ski-lift. The "chairs" are fastened to a 7/8th inch wire rope by patent clips. At Wollaton it’s running in a five-hundred and fifty yards stretch of roadway and, there are plans to extend it.
The gradient is one in five in parts, although one in two is being negotiated elsewhere.
Greater safety, cheapness of installation and the fact that men can travel without disturbing the ordinary working of the pit are among its advantages.
It is another of the innovations which are making the mines of Britain more and more efficient. - Researcher Comments
