Summary
BFI synopsis: The Hon. Richard Wood, Minister of Power, inspects recent developments in the Northumberland coalfields
NCB Commentary - Rising Sun colliery - which is being reconstructed - was one of the pits visited by the Minister of Fuel and Power, the Honourable Richard Wood when he toured part of the Northumberland Coal Field.
He went to the top of one of the 115 feet high winding towers. Rising Sun is connected underground with one of the earliest pits in the area which began nearly 200 years ago. Inspite of these early workings reserves of 600 million tons are still available.
Next the Mininster went to the new car hall. Above and below Ground, Rising Sun has been given a very new look which will increase saleable output to over 3,000 tons a day.
On his way round the Minister passed other collieries, among them Weetslade, scene of more reconstruction. Dudley, over 100 years old and now producing coal by modern methods; and Seaton Delaval which is one of the oldest working pits in the Country.
