- BFI synopsis: a tracer at N.C.B. Headquarters near Barnsley, Dorothy Hyman is seen winning the 3 "A’s" titles for 100 and 200 yards
NCB Commentary - Coming off shift at Monk Bretton Colliery in Yorkshire is Jack Hyman (on the left) who has been there for 16 of his 33 mining years.
In his free time, he tends his old car - keeping it in tip-top condition for it has serious work to do. He used his savings to buy it mainly because it makes life easier for his eighteen-year-old-daughter and she’s a very important person.
She’s Dorothy Hyman - holder of the 3 A’s Championships for the 100 and 220 yards. Every night she practices at the sports ground at Hinckleton Main Colliery, often against the men for they give her closer competition.
During the day she works at the N.C.B. Area Headquarters at Ardsley Hall, near Barnsley. She’s a tracer in the planning department, plans for new collieries and plans for getting into Britain’s Olympic team to run side by side in Dorothy’s mind.
Dressmaking is her hobby - patterns and plans perhaps go together.
One of a family of five, her brother John finds model making a keen runner up to his interests in his sister’s success.
And now to Motspur Park near London for the 3 A’s Championships to see Dorothy win those titles. There was keen opposition in the 220 but after a bad start she made up time to finish four yards ahead of Miss Dew.
The 100 yards was close as well.
With a strong finish she just beat Miss Bijeveld of Holland. At the age of 18 her best time for the 100 meters of 10.7 is only .4 of a second outside the world record; she’s a mining girl with a fast future. - Researcher Comments
