- BFI synopsis: the exhibition held by the Council of Underground Machinery Manufacturers at Olympia, drawing mining men from fifty countries to London
NCB Commentary - The big mining machinery exhibition at Olympia brought visitors from all over the world to London.
Here, under one roof, could be seen all the latest developments in modern mining, both in full sixe and model form. And there’s nothing like a model to arouse the enthusiasm of a younster.
The Muschamp Coal-Winner aroused a lot of interest. It’s a conversion unit for the Anderton Shearer Loader and it replaces the rotary cutting drum. It is intended to help it produce larger coal.
On a smaller scale the Siskel Cutter is an easily handled two-man job designed for room and pillar working; it is really developed from the bar-cutter - one of the first machines to be used in British collieries.
The accent was on research at the Coal Board’s own stand. A model showed developments in dust suppression and there was an electronic device to differentiate between coal and other strats.
A meter tells the operator how deep the coal is and he can guide his machine with confidence and accuracy.
The device can be fitted to cutter-loaders like the Carwley Midget Miner which works in seams so narrow that its essential to know exactly which is coal and which is floor.
This exhibition, the second to be held in Britain, was attended by mining men from over 50 countries. - Researcher Comments
