Summary
BFI synopsis: The Derbyshire versus Yorkshire match featuring four Derby mining men - Cliff Gladwin, Les Jackson, George Dawkes, and Edwin Smith.
NCB Commentary - Grassmoor Colliery.
Glapwell Colliery.
Whitwell Colliery and an East Midland’s Area Stores. What’s the connection between them and a cricket crowd at Chesterfield watching Derbyshire play Yorkshire on a fine summer Saturday?
Well here’s the answer - first, it’s Leslie Jackson - the fast bowler and a miner at Whitwell, and George Dawkes the wicket keeper who works at the area stores.
And young Edwin Smith an off-spinner who is underground at Grassmoor. The fourth comes into the picture later - meanwhile Derbyshire are batting and there was a prospect of a good days cricket for the capacity crowds which included many miners.
At the end of the first day they had reached 351 for 8 and declared.
On Monday, Cliff Gladwin joined the boys at an early practice. It was 3 mining men attacking a fourth and poor old George didn’t get much time to think out his strokes.
Gladwin was at Glapwell Colliery. Capped 8 times for England, and now in League cricket he’s always ready to lend a helping hand to the younger county men like Edwin Smith.
Dawkes and his gloves have served Derby for 12 successful years. But it’s 11.30 and the game begins again.
Leslie Jackson made his debut in the same year as Dawkes. Against Worcester in 1958 he did a hat trick and all three were caught by George. He toured India in 1950-51 and played for England against New Zealand in 1949.
25 year old Smith, took 8 for 21 in only his second game.
Derby v. Yorkshire at Chesterfield was a special occasion. Although Truman was away playing for England, the pits were represented on both sides. It was a fixture which could well be called the "miners’ match".
