Summary
BFI synopsis: An international diving festival at Dawdon.
NCB Commentary - Dawdon Colliery, well known to diving enthusiasts, attracts a big crowd for an International Diving Festival.
Dawdon were acting as hosts to international visitors from Russia, Scottish and A.S.A. teams. Held up by travel difficulties the Russian team arrived only three quarters of an hour before the contest was due to start, having travelled all night. Nevertheless this contest, staged at a pool created by miners for the enjoyment of the community, provided a demonstration of olympic quality. A rain-spattered crowd settled down to watch the sport.
In the men’s high diving Galitine opened for Russia. Here’s the Russian Mezim doing a 2 1/2 somersault. In the women’s high diving here comes British champion Charmain Welsh, daughter of a pit manager. She was to come second to the Russian Gorokhivshkaia, but to wint he springboard event. Galitine again diving for Russia.
Peter Heatly of Scotland was to come top in the men’s high board. Mezim of Russia took third place. J. Candler diving for England. Molly Wieland of England was taking part in her first international contest. There goes Peter Heatly again - now let’s watch some in slow motion.
Here’s Elsie Melville doing a running 1 1/2 somersault with pike. Peter Heatly goes down gracefully in slow time. Charmain Welsh shows off a running reverse dive. Galitine performs an inward 1 1/2 somersault with pike. Charmain Welsh again doing a back pike dive. Mezim goes down beautifully from a handstand start. Here he is again showing a running 1 1/2 somersault. D. Holmes runs in off the ten metre board. Galitine once more; this time a handstand and forward cut through. Lastly here’s Peter Heatly again.
Final placings gave the Russians the honours in the women’s high board and men’s spring board events, while Peter Heatly took congratulations on his men’s high board win, after an afternoon of top class sport.
