- BFI synopsis: the Duke of Edinburgh at the N.C.B. training centre in Clackmannanshire, presenting awards to trainees who have qualified under his Awards Scheme
NCB Commentary - Near Alloa the Coal Board residential training centre and the neighbouring village of Sacuhie are beflagged in honour of a distinguished visitor.
On the local football ground, excitement builds up as a Navy helicopter wings in with on board the Duke of Edinburgh.
Greeted by Scottish Division Chairman R. W. Parker, the Duke, wasting no time, drives through welcoming crowds to the Training Centre.
Here, mining and education personalities are presented to His Royal Highness.
The Duke made a whirlwind tour of the Training Centre which handles 120 boys on a three month course to fit them for duties in the Scottish Mining Industry.
Physical training and carpentry - the Duke took them all in his stride. In the workshops he paid close personal attention to the range of handicrafts in which Sacuhie trainees demonstrate their spare-time interests.
Main purpose of his visit was to present awards to trainees who have qualified under the Duke’s own Awards Scheme.
By the time the Duke was ready to present the awards, the gymnasium had been turned back into an auditorium.
Ten boys from Sauchie were honoured during the Duke’s call.
This welcome visit, brief as it was, was only one call during a crowded day in the Duke’s Scottish itinerary.
From behind the houses north of Alloa, the helicopter sped him on his way. - Researcher Comments
