Summary
BFI synopsis: 96-year-old winding engine
NCB Commentary - What is it? ... that’s the question. A merry ground? A stirring machine perhaps? - No, it’s not either of them. Maybe this will give you a clue - yes, you’ve guessed now. It’s a winding engine and it’s 96 years old.
Tom Hurst, himself 60, has been winding for 40 years, 33 of them st Shireoaks Colliery.
In two years he’ll be working on electric winder, and the idea doesn’t please him. "You can feel a steam engine", he says.
Certainly this old vertical engine is the sort to make you sentimental. 96 years old and still going strong.
