- Summary
- NoS synopsis: new methods of tracing gas leaks in the mains devised by Dutch engineers.
NCB Commentary - Subsidence in mining districts is a common happening. Houses and roads, and what lies beneath the road, can all be affected.
Underground gas mains can be fractured and the escaping gas may be dangerous if the leak is large.
Now in the East Midlands, the local Gas Board are using a new technique to trace leaks.
First, very small holes, only five-eighths of an inch wide, are drilled in the roadway where a leak is suspected.
Behind the drill follow two Dutch engineers who devised the system. They claim that by inserting a thin nozzle into the hole and taking a reading on a sensitive meter they can track down gas escapes more accurately and faster than before.
Dutch foreman, Kolenbrander, has located the part of the roadway where the gas mains has been damaged. Back he goes to the car which tows a small compressor to work the drill.
Now he and engineer Zuurbier can pinpoint the exact location of the leak on a large scale map. Gas Board workmen move in to repair the damage, and another possible source of danger and of waster is eliminated. - Researcher Comments
