- Summary
- BFI synopsis: advances in medical care for miners. Survey of the expansion of health services.
NCB Commentary - Research on rheumatic and arthritic diseases has made significant advance.
With British pits going deeper and deeper into the earth, problems of heat and humidity at the face have been making themselves felt. Research into the reactions of men working under these conditions is being carried out and during the past year, even, a new form of lightweight breathing gear for rescue men has been successfully developed.
But the biggest research effort is still concentrated on pneumoconiosis as the most widespread occupational health hazard.
The long term field survey started in 1952 is making good progress, and is beginning to show scientific results which should point the way towards the eradication of this crippling disease.
In harnessing the resources of modern medicine as one of the services of a great industry, to examine the human as well as the scientific problems, the Coal Board gives testimony of the belief that an industry is only as strong as the health of the men who staff it. - Researcher Comments
