- BFI synopsis: a house in Croydon is to be converted to modern fuel-burning appliances
NCB Commentary - In this typical three bedroomed house in Crodon live the Williams family, Tom Williams, his wife Winifred and 4-year old Christopher.
An outside coal store is common enough in many British houses. So, unfortunately, is the lack of a bathroom and piped hot water.
The fires in the William’s house are old - fashioned, inefficient and messy, as Mrs. Williams knows only too well.
A few months ago, however, a chain of events started which is going to make life a lot more comfortable for the Williamses.
The Croydon Joint Services Committee advertised for a house which lacked modern amenities and which could be converted under the Rent and Repairs Grant Scheme.
The Williamses put down their name and were selected to be the fortunate guinea-pigs for this experiment.
First step was for an architect to look ove the premises and draw up recommendations. A new cooker, constant hot water, new fires - all solid fuel burning - and redecoration throughout; they’re all on the list of improvements. This is the spare bedroom where half the space is going to make way for a much needed bathroom. - Keywords
