Summary
BFI synopsis: a degree from Durham University for Sam Watson, a member of the N.U.M.
NCB Commentary - Congregation day at Durham University opened in sunshine appropriate to the occasion, but by the afternoon, as university dignitaries came out of the great hall of Durham Castle the skies had opened to spoil what is usually a colourful occasion.
Among those being honoured by the University with the Doctorate of Civil Law was Sam Watson, secretary of the Durham mineworkers.
The University’s public orator said that the degree was being conferred on Mr. Watson because of the devotion, unselfishness, integrity and ability which have been exhibited in his public service.
After a service in Durham’s great Norman Cathedral the university party came out once more into a teeming downpour. Earlier in the day Sam Watson recorded this message for Mining Review at Durham N. U. M. Headquarters:
