NCB synopsis: Open Day for friends and relations at young miners Residential Training Centre at Washington, Co. Durham.
NCB Commentary - Through the Washington Residential Training Centre pass many of Durham’s miners of tomorrow. To-day they hold open house for parents of the lads now halfway through the thirteen week training course.
Friends and relations are invited to look over the school and enjoy themselves watching the sporting prowess of their offspring.
The highpoint of enthusiasm from the sidelines was reserved for the obstacle race, which was a test of skills quite unconnected with the craft of mining. Half-way through the race, with a quick-change act in progress, it became hard to tell which were the boys and which were the mums.
But since it is Mum’s Day there’s no keeping the ladies out of it. Domestic science is put to the test in carrying an egg from point A to point B and on this occasion there’s no doubt at all about who is the winner. - Researcher Comments
