- BFI synopsis: A visit of President of Australian Federation of Mineworkers to South Wales
NCB Commentary - Bedwas colliery welcomes home a son of Wales. Back in his native land after 35 years was the President of the Australian Miner’s Federation, Idris Williams.
With Manager N. A. Walters, one of his first calls was to inspect face conditions at Bedwas. A native of Mountain Ash, Mr. Williams was particularly interested in pneumokoniosis research.
At Llandough Hospital he toured the wards with the medical director, Dr. Gilson. He has shown experimental equipment which, combined with the widespread use of X-rays and the installation of dust suppression devices underground, has succeeded in drastically reducing the toll from dust disease in the S. Wales coalfield.
At a Press Conference in Cardiff, Idris Williams declared that the progress made in British Mining has been remarkable. With him was another miner of Welsh stock who has spent his working life in Australia, accompanied by his wife.
Idris Williams will take back to Australia a picture of the British Coal Industry very different from that he remembers from the time that he emigrated in 1920. - Researcher Comments
