- Summary
- BFI synopsis: Beighton miners’ welfare versus Wrexham; Wrexham won 3-0 with goals scored by Glyn Hughes and Tommy Bannan (both miners).
NCB Commentary - Millmoor Ground, home of Rotherham United, the 2nd Division team with strong mining associations, was the scene of a first round FA cup tie between Wrexham, wearing white shorts, and Beighton Miners’ Welfare.
An 8,000 crowd saw a fast and exciting game, with Beighton in the first half boldly invading their third division opponents’ territory. But it was never a one-sided game. Right from the start Pape, the Beighton keeper, was kept on his toes by harrassing movements from the Wrexham forwards. Watch number 7. That’s Hughes, who came to Wrexham from Sheffield Wednesday and set much of the pace on the right wing. And here, in the 31st minute, is Hughes’ first goal. It takes a miner to beat the miners - and that’s just what Hughes is.
But as the game wore on into the second half, Wrexham’s class began to tell, and time and again there were determined rushes at Beighton’s goalmouth. Not that they had anything to be ashamed of, mind you; they kept up the pressure too. Beighton’s left winger Wild had to go off for ten minutes after a collision. Five minutes after the interval, Hughes added his second goal. In the 65th minute another miner playing for Wrexham, Tommy Bannan from Airdrie, banged in the third goal. So Beighton won’t be this year’s giant-killers, but they went down game. - Researcher Comments
