- BFI synopsis: miner Willie Pierce competes in World Amateur Billiards, seen competing in friendly match with Australian Robert Marshall.
NCB Commentary - A welcome visitor to London is William Pierce, miner from Merthyr Vale. He hasn’t come just to see the sights. Willie has been Welsh Amateur Billiards Champion for the last two years, and he’s headed for the hall in London’s West End which is the Mecca of amateur players. For the first time since the way the World’s Amateur Championship is to be decided, and William Pierce is having a crack at it.
Here he meets Robert Marshall, Australian amateur champion, for a friendly game. In the championships Marshall beat Pierce and broke three English records in the process. Two of his breaks were over 400.
Willie Pierce’s record break is 372. At home, he goes from the pit to the Merthyr Vale Ex-servicemen’s club to play, and you can find him there most evenings. Merthyr’s proud of you, Willie, and we hope to see you again! - Researcher Comments
