NoS Summary - Processes involved in mining and processing radium.
British Pathe synopsis: "Precious beyond all other earthly substances. A lot of it comes from Colorado pitch-blende ore - " High angle shot of men inside a mine they shovel rocks into a container on wheels. M/S of exterior of radium mine - the trolley full of rocks is wheeled out. M/S of the trolley travelling up a conveyor belt. M/S of two men tying sacks to the back of a mule. "Lurching along the dusty roads to the mills." M/S of a mule train making its way along a country road. L/S of the landscape with the mules kicking up dust as they walk along. "Ground, distilled, and filtered until all foreign elements are eliminated." Panning shot of large vats which process the radium. Various shots of machinery and processes involved in extracting radium. Male and female workers seen stirring steaming bowls. C/U of steaming bowls. "Then, looking strangely like table salt, the radium is extracted and placed in small tubes - infinite power for good or ill." M/S of man working in a laboratory scooping out tiny amounts of radium and putting it into tiny tubes. Above a representation of a pile of rocks a caption reads: "Interesting facts about Radium." "14,000 tons of ore - and 10.000 tons of distilled water produce one ounce of Radium." Next illustration describes how 1 lb of radium would produce as much heat as 150 tons of coal." Incomplete
