Summary
NoS Summary - A glimpse of the "Bal Tabarin" in Paris.
British Pathe synopsis: C/U of a crowded dance floor. Intertitle reads: "There may be a Frenchman amongst the guests." Another shot of the dance floor, followed by a leg level shot as the couples shimmy around the floor. Unusual shot of the mirrors above the band - we see their reflections. The camera then pans down to show the conductor of the band. Shot of the dance floor. "And, oh! the gay girls! - and gayer dances!" L/S of the cabaret space. Four girls do a high kick routine in shiny outfits. Two others join them and they dance around showing off their stocking tops. C/U of one of the tables in the nightclub. A waiter brings champagne. Several of the women at the bar wear Fez hats. Back on the dance floor the high kick girls continue their routine. C/U of two trumpet players. High angle shot of the cabaret show. Quite a large club. The girls do a funny knock kneed dance backwards towards a proscenium arch with curtains. High angle shot of some other dancers who do a cancan routine, holding up their skirts and waving their legs around. C/U of the girls’ feet and legs as they hop around on one leg. Naturally we get a good view of stocking tops, bloomers and legs! The girls dance around in a ring whilst one of the group dances in the middle flashing her knickers. The girls run up onto the stage and sit on chairs with their legs crossed. "La vie (and view) Parisienne - tomorrow never comes here ---" Shot of the dance floor - some couples are both girls. Low angle shot of the band - trumpet players and trombone player. High angle shot of the beautiful people on the balcony, looking down on to the dance floor. Low angle shot of some revellers. The girls hold wine or glasses and make a toast to the camera. The men shout and wave. There is a mixed race couple on the dance floor.
